Oscar night is nearly upon us and
Hollywood's finest and fittest are preparing for their big entrance on the red carpet. 2012 is newcomers' year for the female nominees.
Rooney Mara (
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo),
Octavia Spencer (
The Help) and
Janet McTeer (
Albert Nobbs) and
Jessica Chastain (
The Help) will all be vying for a little gold statue. It's strange to think that this time last year, the world was still relatively unaware of their talent.
Jessica has been been the most prolific, starring in no less than six films in 2011 - indeed in a recent interview for the Telegraph the actress joked 'I'll be the first unknown that everyone's going to be sick of. People will say, “We have no idea what her name is, but she is everywhere!”'
The daughter of a fireman and a vegan chef, Jessica does not have acting in her genealogy but she has been working steadily in the industry since leaving college. Her fiery red hair, small frame, pale complexion and strong structured face set her apart from many of her Hollywood contemporaries (she is indeed more like a young Isabelle Huppert or Helen Mirren, whom she plays as a young women in new wartime thriller, The Debt).
Her look is unique, but her radiance is not - it's all down to harmony, which
Jessica manages to exemplify in every picture, whether she is on the red carpet or strolling along
Venice Beach, near to where she now lives. Her make-up is always very simple, but her palette is strict: pretty berry colours for lips, black liner for eyes, violet or sandy eye shadows. If there is something she doesn't scrimp on, it's highlighter. Especially on her razor sharp cheekbones and brow line. Here are some of our favourite tools for achieving
Jessica's flawless finish, perfect for those lucky enough to have auburn hair especially.
Max Factor Liptint in Marshmallow
This is a new shade from the Max Factor Liptint family. Easy to apply and really long lasting - plus when is it not fun to apply lip colour from a pen? The shade is quite pinky rose when applied. £7.99 from Boots
Arch Angel by Me Me Me
A clever tool for taming unruly brows and brightening the eye area. The Arch Angel stick comprises a brow gel on one end and a creamy highlighter to shape and define on the other. Dab the cream along the brow bone and to the inner corners of your eyes for the best results. £8.50 from mememecosmetics.co.uk from April
Ultra Nude Eye Palette by Bobbi Brown
Play around in the nude! It's always a tempting to buy vibrant colours when you hit the make-up counter, but this new palette ensures that you don't miss out on any of the fun. Experiment with these pretty shades that have been developed to suit everyone. £39 from Bobbi Brown and major department stores
Perfect Touch Foundation by YSL
A super silky foundation that can be applied with precision thanks to the brush applicator - although not a new release, it's still one of the best for achieving a uniform finish that glows. £34 Debenhams and major department stores.
Watt's Up by Benefit
This is the piece de resistance that will help you achieve Jessica's champagne glow. With a cream-to-powder finish, the stick gives a luminous sheen and can be used on cheeks and brow bones. £24.50 from Benefit.co.uk
